My GGGrandfather was named Robert Smith
born around 1838.
Information from the 1871 and 1881 census':
Robert's wife was Margaret and his children were James, John, Mary Jane and Isabella.
Mary Jane Smith was my GGrandmother, married twice becoming a Sellars then a Tootle.
Its Robert and Margaret Smith now have interest in if anyone out there can help.
Robert was a stonemason and they lived for a time at Blackburn Rd Great Harwood, then to
13 Clinkham.
About Clinkham. A row of cottages which I
believe later became known as Edge End row.
A quarry of the same name (Clinkham) was located behind the cottages. The quarry is long gone ..used as landfill in the seventies. |

My family started in the Thatto Heath Section of St Helens. Then moved to Parr and Clock Face, Button Wood Area. My dad was a well known singer locally, his singing name Steve Moran, but his real name Arthur Smith.
His mother's maiden name was PRICE, and her father, my Grandfather Price, was Mayor of St Helens in the 1940s. |

I am interested in finding more information about any Smiths living in the Oldham area, between 1940 to 1970. I have had no contact with the Smith side of family and I am not seeking this, but I want to start tracing my Smith tree back from that date.
Any info welcome. Thank you for taking the time to read this. |

I was born in Middleton in 1941 and emigrated to Australia with my wife and son in 1964. My Grandmother was a Smith and I was intrigued when I saw a mention of a Lucy Whitehead / Smith posted by Dennis. She was my Grandmothers sister in law.
I have traced my Smith family to John Smith born abt 1820 in Middleton Lancs according to the 1861 & 1881 census.
John married Sarah Ann Bowker, also of Middleton, at St Leonards Church, Middleton, in the June Qtr of 1851.
They had eight children between 1851 and 1871 and from the census records never moved house more than 50 yds.
John's father was Amos Smith,
Sarah Ann's father was Thomas Bowker. |

I've traced my Smith Ancestry back to c1780 in Royton and a lead could mean that they actually came from the Broughton/Gargrave area of Yorkshire West Riding.
Joseph Smith married Martha Swire in 1775
at Broughton in Craven
Joseph has now become my Keystone individual, prior to this it was his son Hezekiah.
Joseph and Martha had 3 children baptised at Broughton in Craven. Ann, Joseph & Hezekiah.
The family then moved to Gargrave and another 6 children came along,
Martha, Dinah, Mary, Thomas,
John & Elizabeth.
Joseph was recorded as being a husbandman at the baptism of one of his children.
Joseph died 1797 & was interred back at
Broughton. The family then moved to Kildwick
where Martha died in 1806, again interred
back at Broughton.
The boys of the family all appear to have been
Cloggers. John & Hezekiah were in Royton,
Oldham by 1841, Thomas & Joseph in Honley.
Very little is known about the girls.
All the boys married apart from Joseph(Jnr)
who died in a Turkish Bath at the age of 80.
Some speculative info:
Joseph Smith (Snr) was possibly baptised
29/1/1743 at All Saints,Broughton,
father Joseph.
If so, siblings would include the following
baptised at Broughton:
1738 30/4 GEORGE
1739 23/12 THOMAS
1741 20/12 JOHN
1743 29/1 JOSEPH
1746 30/3 WILLIAM
1747 25/6 HARRY
1750 5/8 JAMES
1753 29/7 ROBERT
1755 28/3 MARY
If anyone is connected or can offer further info then please do not hesitate to contact me.

My Smiths can be traced back to Randell Smith b.1563 at Peckforton, Bunbury, Cheshire. We are descended from his son Hugh b.1601 and died 1662.
The family stayed in and around Bunbury Parish for the next 200 years. In the late 1700s they were living in Bath House, Horsley Lane which is on the Peckforton/ Beeston border in Bunbury Parish.
Richard Smith b.1786 married Sarah Dutton and they had a son called Peter who was a Registrar and Poor Law Officer in the area. His son George b.1836 married Mary Lightfoot in St Bride's Church in Liverpool in 1859 where they settled and raised a large family.
The Smiths remained in Liverpool until 1998 when my father died. The name Hugh was brought back into use, after a lapse of many years, by George and Mary for their first son born in 1860. It is still in use as a family name 400 years after that first recorded use in 1601!

My great grandmother:
Elizabeth Smith b.c1852(? Liverpool area)
Father: Thomas Smith, labourer.
Elizabeth married James Reid on 13 Oct 1870 at the Parish Church of Liverpool.
James was FULL age whilst
Elizabeth was MINOR.
At the time of their marriage, both James Reid (and his family) and Elizabeth and the Smith family all lived in Furlong Street, Liverpool (off the Scotland Road area).
After Elizabeth gave birth to my grandfather - Christopher Reid, in 1872, she seems to disappear, so does her husband James Reid (but he would most likely be away at sea). Elizabeth is not recorded in the 1881Census
but her son Christopher is living in Liverpool with his uncle and aunt -
Charles and Mary Lucas (both born
in Ireland). Our Dad always maintained
that he had both Irish and Scottish blood.
Elizabeth had at least one brother -
James Smith.
In the 1881 Census,
there's a Mary Smith widow 60 & James Smith 27, living at the same address as my people. So it looks possible this could be James, brother of my g.gran Elizabeth & if so, points to her and her family as being of Irish descent.
I'm hoping that maybe some other member(s) might be researching the same family.
Elizabeth's brother James Smith will have most likely married and produced offspring too - hopefully.

As shown within the descendency document (link above) one of the sons of John and Mary Smith was Ebenezer Ralph Smith, born Ireland. He became a partner in Capes and Smith, Estate Agents, Manchester. His home was in Prestwich at the time he died, 31 May 1851 at Lytham St Annes. Buried at All Saints, Chorlton on Medlock.
He married twice, and his second marriage was
to Frances Dunn, 3 April 1831 at Prestwich.
They had a son, Ebenezer George Smith,

I must admit my heart sank when I
discovered that my great great
grandmother's name was Mary Smith!!
All I know about her is that she was
born circa 1829 in or around the
Withnell area of Lancashire.
She married Thomas Woodburn
at St Paul's Withnell in 1849.
According to the certificate her
father was Joseph Smith, a quarryman.
In 1841 the family are living in the
Abbey Mill (Abbey Village) area.
From that record I discovered that
Mary had an older brother
Joseph (b circa 1819) & 3 sisters,
Ellen, Esther & Nancy
(born between 1822 & 1826).
Obviously there could be more siblings.
Her mother must have died before
that date, so I don't know her name.
I am hoping to find more about my
Mary Smith's family. |
