My Smith interests are:
Jonas Ambler Smith (my GGGrandfather)
a collier who was born on 18th Oct 1858
at Northerwram Halifax, the illegitimate
son of Ellen Smith. Jonas died in Burnley
workhouse on 29th March 1927.
Jonas's whole family moved from Halifax
to Burnley between 1891 and 1901.
I am aware of 5 children but suspect that
there were probably more as there is a ten
year gap which would have been surprising.
The ones I know about are:
Thomas Smith b.1881 Halifax
Annie Elizabeth Smith (my GGrandmother) b.1883 Halifax
Elsie Smith b 1893 Halifax
Ada Smith b 1894 Halifax
Ada married John Thornber, Burnley 1914.
Edith Smith b 1897 Halifax
Edith’s married name was Sedgewick and
she also lived in Burnley and died there in 1958
Going back further all I have is:
Ellen Smith born c 1836 in Halifax….
her mother’s name was Mary and her father
had died before 1841.
Mary was also born in Halifax c 1797
but I don’t know her maiden name.
I would love to hear from anyone else researching this family.

My ancestor Mary Ann Smith.
born 1850 Collyhurst Manchester.
was the daughter of James Smith,
who was born in Ireland, possibly c1810.
I connected with a family all cousins,
also descended from Mary Ann, and they
had useful things like her exact age,
recorded in her hand on what she called
a "Register" showing her husband and
children's dates of birth, christening and
deaths (although the deaths are partly
done by the eldest daughter).
That enabled me to trace Mary Ann's
birth, and the address she was born at:
Reg District of St George, Manchester.
14 May 1850. Mary Ann (Girl)
Father: James Smith
Mother: Mary Ann Smith
(Formerly Gibbons)
Fathers Occupation: Tailor
Informant & Residence
Mother, of 57 Reaver Street, Collyhurst
Registered on 14 June 1850
1851 Census

the marriage is recorded as 29 Nov 1841
Both shown as living in Hollinwood at
marriage.
His Father shown as John Smith

James, Son, Chr 14 Apr 1848
at Manchester Cathedral
Mary Ann, Daur, Chr 16 Jun 1850
at Manchester Cathedral
and according to her 'Register'
she was baptised as RC at St Chads
shortly before she married.
On Mary Anne's Marriage Certificate in
1869, her father is listed as James Smith
(Deceased), Fruiterer, which is the
occupation she listed for herself and in
which she was joined by her husband
John McDonnell, and which they ran at
Smithfield Market into the 1920's
The business was not continued by any
of their 12 children. I identified the couple
in the 1871 Census as:-

I'm from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire but my line
of the Smith's originated in Halifax in the late 18th Century.
Later my great grandfather, James Henry Smith
(Born 1853 in Halifax ) got married and moved to the Barnsley area (Ryhill, Havercroft, Woolley and Cold Hiendley) where he was a Policeman.
I'm keen to follow any leads in Halifax or Barnsley areas.

My Grand Mother, Mary Smythe (or Smyth) married James Rutherford. I have found a union in Manchester Cathedral in 1842 that fits the bill for time and name.
I think I am on the right track as I haven't been able to find another marriage of these two names that fits the time elements. Proving and connecting is another issue of course. The census shows Mary as born in Ireland and James born in Scotland/Ireland.
James and Mary had one child I am sure of, James Smythe Rutherford b1843 in Belfast, Ireland. He married Catherine Totton 1862 St Anne's Church of Ireland, Belfast. The marriage certificate lists James Smythe Rutherford's father James as a carpenter.

My G.G. Grandfather was Richard Smith
born 1832 in Leeds. Married Hannah (possibly Dyson) in Dec.Qu.1850. Hannah was born 1834 in Bradford.
Richard and Hannah had six children including my Great Grandfather Nursur Smith.
This Nursur Smith was the starting jolt that set me on tracing the family genealogy when I came into possession of a photograph of him with his name written on the back.
Any help on this including possible source of the name Nursur would be much appreciated. |

I'm researching my grandmother, Annie (nee Smith) Leigh b.1902 in Preston, Lancashire. She emigrated to Yonkers, NY in 1922 to be with her husband Alex Leigh.
My Smith family started in Preston with my great-grandfather Bernard Smith coming from Dublin in the 1850's with his wife Mary. The 1861 census shows him living on Clarence Street, Preston, with his father Thomas (a retired labourer), his mother Mary, and his wife Mary. His census records show him consistently working as a striker in a blacksmith foundry for almost 40 years.
Between 1855-1873 Bernard had 8 children, all born in Preston, in the following order:
Mary Smith (b.1856) No information.
Edward Smith (1857) m Margaret and had 3 children, Edward, Mary and Joseph.
Ann Smith (1859) m John Bonney (son of Edward Bonney & Jane Cottam), and lived on Dunderdale Street. Ann and John had sons, Edward and Bernard Bonney. In 1891, Ann's brothers Joseph and Francis Smith were boarders at her house, prior to Joseph's marriage date. Ann's son Bernard Bonney m Walburga SMITH, the daughter of Ann's brother Joseph. Joseph and Walburga had a son, John "Jack" Bonney.
Aloysius Smith (1863) may have married Elizabeth Croft. (He is not associated with Trader Horn Smith)
Joseph Francis Smith (1869-1921)
my great-grandfather: 1st married in 1896 to Mary Ellen McKearney (dau of Owen McKearny of Ireland). Joseph was a sacristan/church caretaker of the St. Walburge Church for years according to marriage certificates I have for his children.
Joseph Francis and Mary Ellen had 7 children in the following order:
Bernard Smith (1888) married and had a son Joseph (no other information).
Mary "May" Smith (1893-1960) m William John Leigh, who is my father's Godfather. (See footnote for link to my Leigh family posting) Mary and William John Leigh's daughter, Shiela (1933) m George Cookson.
Walburga Smith (1894) (Aunt Wally, my father's godmother) m Bernard Bonney, son of Joseph's sister Ann (nee Smith). Walburga and Bernard's son, John "Jack" Bonney reportedly was married twice, his second marriage reportedly to Ellen "Nellie" Leigh (See footnote for link to my Leigh family posting)
Joseph Smith (1895-1954) m Veronica Rawsthorn. Their son Joseph m "a Portsmouth girl named Pamela".
John Smith (1897) m Florence Rigby, dau of Fredrick George Rigby and Ann Farnsworth
and step-daughter of Isabella Walburga Billington. John and Florrie had daughter Margaret "Madge" and son Austin.
Edward Smith (1900) No infomation.
Annie (1902-1997) my grandmother,
m Alexander Leigh (my grandfather) in 1923 in Yonkers, NY. She had a son Patrick, a daughter Victoria, 3 grandchildren (me), and 5 great-grandchildren (See footnote for link to my Leigh family posting). Alexander is the brother of William John Leigh who married Mary Smith, Annie's sister.
After the death of Mary Ellen in 1912, Joseph Frances Smith remarries to Isabella Walburga (nee Billington) Rigby, in 1916, a widow with 4 children: Florence, Agnes, William, and Wilfred.
Joseph and Isabella had a son -
Francis Smith (1916) who later died in Rangoon during WW2.
Thomas Smith (1870) No information.
Francis Thomas Smith (1872) may have married Emma Stanley and had 8 children: Emma, Mary, Bernard Aloysius, Amelia, Joseph, Edward, and Ada Marie.
Bernard Ignatius Smith (1873) may have married Mary Keenan.
All of my Smith family relations reportedly lived in an around Central Preston, some of the properties may have been taken over by the University.
